The Khader Adnan Hunger Strike in Context

19 February 2012

The hunger strike struggle in which Khader Adnan is engaged in is based on long epic experience of strikes, where the Palestinian detainees’ steadfastness dazzled even the jailers who slam the doors of cells. And without these hunger strikes which were culminated with martyrs, the detainees won’t be able to grab their demands and rights, because the prisons administration from the outset adopted the policy of procrastination, and making the Palestinian detainee going on in a vicious circle, to make it easier to pounce on him.

The hunger strikes in particular at Ashkelon prison at the beginning of the strikes experience contained a strong message to the Israeli occupation prisons administration that “We reject your policies, plans and cling to our humanity and patriotism, and will not succumb to any action and repressive practices.”
The hunger strike at Ashkelon prison in 1976 confirmed that the Prisoners are able to raise the pace of national action and work to the highest level, and that the time of fear is over, and that the captive movement is an organized and disciplined.

But the hunger strike at Nafha prison in 1980 was a very important quantum leap in the process of hunger strikes, and we can say that this strike has achieved excellent cultural results, by extracting the right to enter the Palestinian newspapers and participate in the Hebrew newspapers, which break the siege completely, and enabled the detainees to communicate with the outside world.

The mid-eighties hunger strike came with quality results, associated with the detainees famous hunger strike in Jnaid prison, where the prison administration was forced to give a set of demands, particularly the radio and television, which ended completely the cultural and news siege, when became able to follow-up news releases, political programs and keep pace with the art movement.

Today we are witnessing the opposite attack by the prison administration, in order to turn back the hands of time back. But the Palestinian captive movement is confident that the hands of the clock cannot be traced, and that the accumulation of experience and awareness, is supposed to convey the experience forward, therefore, Khader Adnan is now on an open hunger strike, under the title of dignity of human life on the basis of the international conventions and agreements dealing with the prisoner.

His latest arrest:

Khader was arrested on 17 December 2011, when Israeli Occupying Forces (IOF) raided his home outside Jenin at 3:30 am. Before entering his house, soldiers used the driver that takes Khader’s father to the vegetable market, Mohammad Mustafa, as a human shield by forcing him to knock on the door of the house and call out Khader’s name while blindfolded. A huge force of soldiers then entered the house shouting. Recognizing Khader immediately, they grabbed him violently in front of his two young daughters and ailing mother.

The soldiers blindfolded him and tied his hands behind his back using plastic shackles before leading him out of his house and taking him to a military jeep. Khader was then thrown on his back and the soldiers began slapping him in the face and kicking his legs. They kept him lying on his back until they reached Dutan settlement, beating him on the head throughout the 10-minute drive. When they reached the settlement, Khader was pushed aggressively out of the jeep. Because of the blindfold, Khader did not see the wall right in front of him and smashed into it, causing injuries to his face.
