Gaza: Life Among the Ruins

12 July 2015
120715One year ago, Gaza was targeted in a major 50-day Israeli military operation. More than 2 000 Palestinians were killed, and a third of the population was internally displaced, with thousands of homes and buildings destroyed or damaged. Key infrastructure, including Gaza’s only power plant, its electricity network and water and sanitation facilities, were badly damaged. The impact on the Palestinian territory – already affected by an eight-year Israeli blockade – preventing the freedom of movement of people and goods, has been devastating.
Today, nearly 80% of the population relies on international aid, with poverty rates increasing and unemployment recorded at 43% at the end of 2014.120715-II
