BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) — Palestinian Authority police have launched an investigation into a fire in a mosque believed to have been caused by Israeli settlers overnight in a Bethlehem town, the district’s chief prosecutor said Monday.

Alaa Tamimi arrived at the scene of the suspected arson attack against the Al-Anbiya Mosque in the Beit Fajjar town and said investigations would be launched into it “and all settler assaults against Palestinians are being documented as requested by Attorney Muhammad Al-Mughanni.”

Locals told Ma’an on Monday that several settlers ransacked mosque overnight and set fire to carpets inside. Muhammad Taqatqa, who lives next to the mosque, said he saw a white car with Israel license plates leaving the town after the mosque was set on fire, heading west toward the Etzion crossroads.

Taqatqa said 15 versions of the Quran were burned in the incident and that stones surrounding pillars inside the mosque collapsed. Anti-Palestinian slogans were further written across the mosque’s walls, he said.

Residents hurried to extinguish the fire until Palestinian firefighters and police arrived at the scene, adding that locals clashed with assailants following the arson, prompting Israeli forces to deploy in the town to contain the fight.

Israeli army ‘searching for culprits’

An Israeli military spokeswoman told Ma’an that Israeli police in the West Bank have begun operating in the area to locate the assailants.

She further said head of Israel’s Civil Administration Yoav Mordechai “personally spoke with Palestinian Authority officials” to inform them that the Israeli army takes the incident “seriously” and are working on “tracking down the culprits [who will be] severely punished by authorities.”

PA official: Arson part of campaign against everything Palestinian

Director of PA Ministry of Religious Endowment in Bethlehem Muhammad Ayish denounced the attack, describing it as part of a “campaign against everything Palestinian.”

“Israel responds to peace by arson, judaisation, settlement construction and land confiscation. This arson reminds us of the arson against Al-Aqsa Mosque in 1969.”

Israeli settlement of Migdal Oz is a kilometer away from the mosque and there have been several skirmishes between settlers and residents of Beit Fajjar in the past.

A crowd of about 30 Palestinian, international, and Israeli activists gathered at 1 o’clock in Al Ma’asara to protest against the settlements and the construction of the Annexation-Barrier. It was the first day of Yom Kippur, so a more tense atmosphere was expected. Demonstrators chanted against the settlements and the occupation, and gave speeches commemorating the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Yom Kippur, the Jewish “Day of Atonement,” is the holiest day in Judaism. Jews are required to refrain from doing any form of work, including driving a car or even flipping a light switch. The irony of this day is that while Israelis aren’t allowed to work or even drive on the roads the military is allowed to assault unarmed civilians and even wage wars. Every year the army closes its checkpoints during the holiday and many Orthodox Jews assault cars as they drive.

Nevertheless the Israeli Army immediately showed up with 3 jeeps and 10 soldiers. Shortly after the demonstration began Israeli soldiers showed a paper to the crowd informing them that this was a closed military zone. They showed it for 10 seconds, so nobody could see what was written on the paper. The soldiers immediately started throwing tear gas and sound grenades into the crowd, firing a large volume in quick succession. The demonstration continued for about 20 minutes despite the Israeli military’s aggressively disproportionate respond. Nobody was hurt or arrested, and the demonstrations will continue, despite Israeli repression.

This planting project is an effort to reclaim the land around South Bethlehem in an attempt to prevent the surrounding settlements from expanding into and occupying it. This project began in early November and has been very successful, despite repeated harassment from local settlers and the Israeli military. However, on Thursday, December 3rd settlers uprooted and burned several dozen olive trees that had been recently planted. When the landowner complained to the Israeli Police, he was told that it was only a few trees, and that he should be grateful more trees had not been destroyed, as they have been in surrounding villages. The Israeli civil administration showed up a few days later and told the landowner that unless he stops bringing internationals to the field, they will declare the hills a “closed military zone,” effectively preventing anyone — internationals or the landowner — from venturing onto the land. These threats did not work, however, and international activists have continued to work alongside Palestinians in an effort to repair the damage done by the settlers. On Wednesday, members of PSP and other international volunteers were questioned by Israeli military soldiers, but ignored their intimidation tactics and continued working in the fields all afternoon.

Demonstrators accompanied a couple that got married just the night before and two other couples disguised as newlyweds all the way across the village, with marriage songs and protest slogans interchanging and completing each other. Coming close to the end of the built area of the village the couples left to prepare themselves for the next part of the wedding-protest.

The rest of the demonstration proceeded, and was met with soldiers and barbed wire, stopping the demonstration from reaching the village’s agricultural lands. They then gave speeches in Arabic, English and Hebrew, at the end of which the newlyweds appeared right behind the soldiers’ line – marching from the lands towards the village.

The soldiers, now trapped between the marriage procession and the couples, stormed and attacked the demonstrators, hitting them with rifles. Three Israeli activists were arrested, and one of them was beaten badly. All three were charged with assault of the Major who was commanding the soldiers, and with violation of a closed military zone. All three were later released, but are now banned to return to the area for two weeks. The activist who was beaten required medical attention and was taken to a hospital.

Meanwhile the demonstration concluded with no further arrests or wounded. However, the so-called “assaulted” Major pronounced that next week a curfew will be enforced in the village on Friday at 5AM, to prevent any more demonstrations.

The march was stopped by a line of nearly thirty Israeli soldiers, who had stretched a razor wire barrier across the road. The demonstrators gave speeches condemning the Wall and demanding an end to the occupation. At one point, several demonstrators climbed onto a pile of rocks by the side of the road and began to speak out against Israel’s violence and oppression. An army jeep turned on its siren in an attempt to drown out the message, but the crowd roared back, drumming and screaming louder than the siren.

Soldiers then began to push the speakers off the rocks, shoving them back down onto the road. Another speech was given by an elderly woman at the front of the crowd, and the demonstrators climbed back onto the rocks to translate her speech into English. The demonstration continued for nearly two hours before dispersing.

Demonstrations in Ni’lin, Al-Ma’asara, Jayyous, and Bil’in continued this week against the construction of the Annexation Barrier, the confiscation of land, and the destruction of agricultural trees. This week, demonstrations also began in Wadi A-Rasha, a small village in the Qalqylia district that is confronting the destruction of their lands for the Annexation Barrier for a second time.
In Ni’lin, 8 people were injured, 4 by live ammunition, as Israeli forces invaded the village after a midday prayer, attempting to surround local youth. Tear gas, rubber-coated steel bullets, and small-caliber live ammunition were fired at the youth and at homes inside the village.
In Bi’lin a larger than usual gathering of nearly 100 people took their usual path towards the gate in the Fence, protesting the recent destruction of their peace tent by Israeli settlers. Al-Ma’asara held their demonstration in honor of International Women’s Day, and were violently confronted by Israeli military forces.
Earlier this week Wadi A-Rasha began demonstrations once again. They are on the losing end of a recent court order to change the path of the Annexation Barrier in the Qalqylia area. In 2002, the Wall was built in their area, seperating Wadi A-Rasha and 4 other villages from the West Bank, containing them in the so-called “Seam zone”, a political limbo where they required permits to live in their own homes. Now, the Barrier is being re-routed, to include Wadi A-Rasha and 2 of the 4 other villages back into the West Bank, but Wadi A-Rasha will be losing more of its agricultural lands to the Israeli side. So once again, they confronted the Israeli bulldozers. This past Wednesday, Palestinians were joined by Israeli and International activists as they sat in front of the bulldozers, blocking their attempt to destroy the village’s trees and livlihoods. The local residents vow that they will continue to confront the bulldozers and the destruction of their land.

Though the barrier was breached a few times, the Palestinians and their supporters resolved to sit behind the fence to demonstrate their non-violent stance while making their condemnation of the confiscation of Palestinian land for the construction of the Barrier clear. An Israeli supporter was taken from the group and detained for about an hour by Israeli police and soldiers before being released. No injuries were reported. Members of the community made impromptu speeches condemning the Israeli government’s actions. The people of this region have been waging a weekly non-violent struggle against the construction of the Barrier on their land for over a year and have vowed to continue to do so until construction is stopped and the portions already built are torn down.

These demonstrations came two days after Israeli media reported that the Israeli Occupation Forces have been given more “legal” leeway to fire live ammunition at the legs of demonstrators near the “Separation Barrier”. The report also stated that international and Israeli demonstrators were not to be fired on. This policy has been in practice, with varying frequency, since the resistance to the construction of the Annexation Barrier began in 2003. However, news that the Border Police had been given clearance to shoot non-violent demonstrators was worrisome to organizers of Friday’s protests.

Severe restrictions were put in place around Um Salamuna in an attempt to keep international and Israeli supporters from attending the demonstration. Regardless, more than 100 people, including a large contingent of women, marched. Friday was Mothers Day throughout the Middle East. In Al-Khadr, more than 50 people gathered near Route 60 to demonstrate against the confiscation of more 90% of their land for the construction of the Annexation Barrier. Though Israeli snipers were seen in the hills above the demonstration, no shots were fired.

Both Al-Khadr and Um Salamuna are directly affected by the Annexation Barrier’s route around the settlement of Efrat, in the Etzion settlement bloc. Efrat’s mayor recently announced the construction of a new ‘neighborhood’ in Efrat, confiscating even more Palestinian land.

Today, as the residents of Bil’in commemorated their 3rd year of consecutive non-violent resistance to the Apartheid Wall, two other villages in the Betlehem courageously continued their struggles against the Wall as well. Residents of the South Betlehem villages gathered on the land of Um Salamuna along with their supporters and began marching towards a barbed-wire barrier Israeli soldiers erected across their path. When demonstrators approached Israeli soldiers began beating them with clubs and the butts of their rifles. Two children, aged 7 and 9, were hospitalized, one with a broken hand from the beating of the soldiers who prevented activists from marching or even standing still. A member of the regional popular committee, Mahmoud Zahre, and another man were also taken to the hospital after being beaten on their land in the shadow of the ever-expanding Efrat Settlement.

Also today in Al-Khadr the movement against the Annexation Wall, which is already partially completed in the area and will by its completion take 90% of Al-Khadr’s land, continued to build its momentum. Hundreds of Palestinian residents of Al-Khadr and neighboring towns were joined by solidarity activists as they once again attempted to march towards the site of construction. They were joined by Taysir Khalid, a member of the Political Bureau of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine (DFLP) which celebrated its 39th anniversary. Mr. Khalid commended the steadfastness of the people of Al-Khadr and all Palestinians struggling against the Apartheid Wall and theft of their land. He also emphasized the importance of national unity in the face of the occupation, a theme that was also addressed in a speech by Al-Khadr mayor, Ramzi Saleh.
Dozens of Israeli Occupation Forces confronted the march near the road to the Efrat settlement. They rained down rubber-coated steel bullets and noxious gas on the demonstrators. The gas shot was not the “normal” tear gas used in abundance by the IOF. This gas caused several people to faint, vomit, and have convulsions. Reportedly 18 people were hospitalized due to injuries and gas inhalation. Still, though the residents of Al-Khadr have been met by intense repression, the Popular Committee Against the Wall and Settlements reaffirmed their conviction to struggle against the theft of Palestinian land, saying that they are determined that “the Wall will fall.”

The residents of the south Betlehem villages have been waging a non-violent resistance against the theft of their land every week for a year. Friday, demonstrators gathered near the entrance to three villages: Wadi An-Nis, Um Salamuna, and Ma’asara. They then marched down the street towards Route 60, the major thoroughfare for both Palestinians and Israeli settlers. Chanting “no, no Wall” and carrying banners and posters from the Stop the Wall Campaign and other movements, the people marched past Israeli soldiers who did not try to stop the demonstrators.

The Palestinians then held their Friday prayer on the land near Route 60 and several people spoke about their commitment to continuing the struggle and continuing to build bonds between solidarity activists and the Palestinian people.
