13 Boys Arrested From Playground after Army Represses Beit Ommar Demonstration

On Saturday the 19th of February at 1 pm, the Beit Ommar National Committee held a large demonstration to protest the Israeli government’s decision to expand settlements, with support from the United States. They were joined by Palestinian Popular Committees from Hebron, Al-Ma’asara, Beit Ula, At-Tuwani, Surif, and Wadi Rahal, as well as members from the Beit Ommar municipality. The gathered Palestinian activists were also supported by a large number of Israeli and International solidarity activists.

Israeli Forces Arrest 9-Year-Old in Beit Ommar

On February 18, 2011, at 2pm, six military vehicles full of Israeli Forces entered the village of Beit Ommar and began shooting tear gas near the homes of residents. After entering the house of Ahmed Mahmoud al-Alami, soldiers began beating the occupants and arrested Ahmed’s 9-ear-old son Mahmoud.

During the arrest, a soldier carried Mahmoud over his shoulder as he took him from his house towards an army jeep. Mahmoud’s mother ran out after him demanding that the soldiers release her son, but her protests fell on deaf ears. Update: Hamza Abu Hashem has been released. !2 year-old Bilal is still being held by Israeli forces.

On Thursday, January 27th at 2pm, two army jeeps full of Israeli soldiers entered the Palestinian village of Beit Ommar in the southern West Bank, and arrested two Palestinian boys, Bilal Mahmood Awad, age 12, and Hamza Ahmed Abu Hashem age 11. The boys were arrested while they were playing football not far from their homes.

Bilal and Hamza were taken to the nearby Israeli settlement of Karmei Tsur and then transferred to the police station in Kiryat Arba settlement in Hebron. Hamza is the son of a member of the National Committee Against the Wall and Settlements in Beit Ommar, a … Continue reading

On Tuesday, January 25th, 2011, Israeli soldiers raided Beit Ommar in the afternoon and arrested 18-year-old Amar Abed Al-Hamid Abu Maria while he was eating in his home. Israeli Forces entered the outskirts of the village from the nearby settlement of Karmei Tsur, at 4pm. Large amounts of tear gas and sound bombs were fired at buildings and people in this area of Beit Ommar.

Upon reaching the the home of Mohammad Abu Maria, brother of Popular Committee members Yousef and Mousa Abu Maria, the soldiers broke into the residence and arrested his son, Amar, who was taken back to Karmei Tsur. Amar’s family was given no reason for his arrest.

Israeli Forces Arrest Four Children South of Beit Ommar

At around 12pm on Wednesday, January 19th 2011, Israeli soldiers stopped four Palestinian children along Route 60, between Beit Ommar and the city of Hebron. The soldiers detained the youth, all of whom appeared under the age of 15, in an isolated area out of sight of the road. By chance, international observers with the Ecumenical Accompaniment Program in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) traveling in a car spotted the soldiers leading the children away and followed to advocate for their welfare.

14-Year-Old Beit Ommar Resident Released From Israeli Prison

On January 7th, 2011, Mohammad Awad, age 14, was released after being held for more than a month and a half in an Israeli prison. Mohammad was arrested on November 20th, 2010, during one of the weekly Saturday unarmed demonstrations in Beit Ommar.

The Israeli military wrongfully charged Mohammad with throwing stones. However, numerous eye-witnesses, including international and Israeli solidarity activists, claim that Mohammad was not throwing stones but merely participating in an unarmed demonstration in his own village against the neighboring Israeli settlement of Karmei Tsur. Five solidarity activists, all adults, were also arrested along with Mohammad but were released late in the evening of November 20th.

Settlers Set Saffa Ablaze, 3 Palestinian Youth Arrested While Extinguishing the Fire

Last night settlers from the Bat Ayn settlement set fire to 70 olive trees in the Saffa region of Beit Ommar. The trees belonged to the Thalji Aady family, who have been subject to frequent settler violence and military harassment. The fire was lit around 9:30 pm, and burned for 3 hours before fire trucks from the village were able to extinguish the flames. At 11:00 pm 3 military jeeps arrived and attempted to prevent villagers from extinguishing the fire, arresting 3 Palestinian youth in the process.

On Monday, November 1, 2010 Tha’er Abu Hashem, the son of Beit Ommar Popular Committee member Ahmed Abu Hashem, was released on a 2000 shekel bail after being held for more than 4 months without charge or trial in the Israeli military court system. His younger brother, 17 year-old Yousef Abu Hashem, is still awaiting final sentencing.

On Tuesday, November 2, ‘Amer Abu Maria, the nephew of committee members Mousa and Yousef Abu Maria, is set to be released, after a 5 month sentence in Israeli military court. On Thursday, October 28th, 2010, Israeli Forces on foot raided the village of Beit Ommar and arrested two Palestinian youth. Two groups of soldiers came into the village from the nearby Israeli settlement of Karmei Tsur at 3am. The soldiers raided two residences on the outskirts of the village and arrested two youth, both of whom were blindfolded, handcuffed, and brought back to the settlement. Muhammad Ibrahim Abdul Hamid Abu Maria, age 15, and Muhammad Samir Mhana Abu Maria, age 18, have been identified as those arrested. Both boys are participants in the weekly Saturday demonstrations that are organized against the settlements built on Beit Ommar farmland.

Israeli Forces Arrest Five as Late Night Raids Continue

On Tuesday, October 26th at 3:30am, Israeli Forces invaded the village of Beit Ommar and arrested five Palestinian youth after ransacking several of their homes.

Thirteen jeeps with a total of about 70 soldiers raided two areas of the village. Residents reported seeing sound bombs and tear gas used by the army. The arrested youth are identified as:

Hassan Yousef Zal Alkam, age 20
Qadum Yousef Zal Alkam, age 19
Waheed Yousef Sabarnah, age 19
Hamza Shidah Younis Sarbarnah, age 16
Younis Ibrahim Sabri Awwad, age 16
