Beit Ommar Resident Beaten as he Goes to Mosque

Local resident Thaer Mohammed Awad was beaten by Israeli soldiers on Tuesday, August 14, 2012, as he headed to Jerusalem to pray.

The 23 year old was walking to Temple Mount, on the holy Muslim holiday when he was attacked by the soldiers.

After being thrown from a two meter wall, breaking bones and severely cutting his feet, the man was continually beaten despite his screams to ‘stop’. Soldiers then continued to further humiliate the man by making him crawl a distance of fifty meters on his hands and feet. Witnesses to the attack called the ambulance, which transported the man to Hussein Hospital in Beit Jala, where he is now being treated for his fractures.

9 Jul 2012

On July 7, 2012, international and Israeli activists joined Palestinian residents and members of the Popular Committee in the weekly Beit Ommar protest. This week, protestors chanted and carried signs calling for the release of Palestinian political prisoners as they made their way across Palestinian farmland. Once again, they were blocked the Israeli Occupation Forces who declared the farm a “closed military zone” and demanded that they leave. As the activists continued their walk, over 30 soldiers shoved them with their shields and pushed them into trees and rocks. Two Israeli activists were arrested during the demonstration, but both were released later that day.

Beit Ommar currently has the highest number of imprisoned residents of all Palestinian communities in the West … Continue reading

On Monday 11th June 2012, farmers from Beit Ommar, alongside Popular Committee Members and two international activists, were cultivating land adjacent to the illegal Karmei Tsur settlement. After approximately half an hour of working their land, Israeli settlers began to harass the farmers, shouting abuse in English, calling those farming ‘dogs’ and ‘Nazis’, and throwing stones. The farmers continued to peacefully cultivate their land as Israeli Occupation Forces arrived at the scene. One soldier immediately grabbed Popular Committee Member Mousa Abu Maria (aged 35) by the arm. Mousa asked him to let go of his arm and to … Continue reading

Hamouda has since been released, after being subjected to intimidation and interrogated in the early hours of the morning, a tactic widely used by the Israeli military which has recently drawn the anger of several human rights groups. At the time of writing, Malik remains in detention.
