This Saturday’s weekly demonstration in Beit Ommar, which was once again attended by residents and Israeli activists who have been protesting against Israeli Occupation and Apartheid since 2008, had a special message against the arbitrary and illegal killings of Palestinian civilians. In particular, residents carried signs in support of Lubna Hanash, who was killed by Israeli soldiers who opened fire on her while she stood in front of the Aroub Agricultural College, just down the road from Beit Ommar.

Israel Refuses to Prosecute Settler as Attacks Continue in Beit Ommar Area

Two days ago, on January 6th, Israeli newspaper Haaretz reported that the Jerusalem District Attorney had decided not to move forward with the prosecution of an Israeli settler who threw a firebomb into a Palestinian taxi north of Beit Ommar last August, which severely wounded 6 occupants, including children. They decided to close the case even though DNA evidence was found on a glove at the crime scene. It is yet one more example of the Israeli government’s unwillingness to prosecute settlers for their crimes, leading these right-wing settlers to attack and vandalize Palestinian property with increasing frequency.

On January 1, 2013, two elderly … Continue reading

On December 24th a local resident of Beit Ommar died of natural causes. As we have reported before, funerals in Beit Ommar are often attacked by Israeli forces who are stationed at the entrance to the village, which is also the location of the town cemetery. On the same day, a settler bus hit and ran over a child from Beit Ommar, 13 year-old Mohammed Za’aqiq, who was taken to the hospital. The combination of the funeral and the settler hit-and-run were used by the Israeli military as a premise for entering the village and attacking its residents. Tear gas, rubber-coated steel bullets and live ammunition were shot into the village. Several residents were … Continue reading

Today Ahmed Aadi, 43, was found dead outside of Beit Ommar. Ahmed was well-known and popular around town. He had been missing for several weeks, and was mentally disabled. His funeral was held this afternoon in Beit Ommar and was attended by over 1,000 residents. Beit Ommar’s cemetery, which is hundreds of years old, is at the entrance to the village, which is now also permanently occupied by an Israeli military watch tower and IDF forces. Israeli soldiers often attack funeral processions, trying to force local residents to enter the cemetery by climbing over the side wall, claiming funeral processions are a danger to the settlers driving past the entrance of Beit Ommar.
