Yesterday, Thursday, March 8th, 2012, people from the Palestine Solidarity Project took part in two demonstrations in solidarity with women’s day.

The town of Al Walaja is a town on the 1967 ceasefire border. In 1948, most of Al-Walaja was annexed by Israel, and depopulated. A small portion of Al-Walaja remained on the Palestinian side. On Saturday, February 25th, 2012, Palestinian villagers from Beit Ommar, supported by international and Israeli solidarity activists, rallied against the Israeli occupation during the community’s weekly unarmed demonstration. As usual, the demonstrators headed towards the illegal Israeli settlement of Karmei Tzur, which is built on Beit Ommar village farmland. Demonstrators could not get anywhere close to the settlement fence; instead they were met with scores of soldiers preventing them from going any farther by pushing them back. The activists chanted and called upon the soldiers to act more humanely. RAMALLAH (Ma’an) — Medics say a Palestinian protester died Friday during surgery after being shot during clashes with the Israeli army near Ramallah in the occupied West Bank.

Talat Ramia, 25, suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and five others were injured, medics at the Palestine Medical Complex said. Ramia died during surgery, they said.

Israeli forces were firing tear gas and both live and rubber bullets at protesters gathering near the Qalandia checkpoint after hearing rumors of a raid on a holy site in Jerusalem.

An Israeli army spokesman said the incident was under investigation.

On Friday, February 24, 2012, Palestinian activists in Hebron (or Al Khalil in Arabic) organized a protest to open Shuhada Street which is a main street in the old city of Hebron that has been closed by Israeli soldiers to Palestinians. Hundreds of Israeli settlers now illegally live off of Shuhada street and their movement is not impeded by Israeli Forces. Hundreds of people attended the demonstrations from Hebron, from Palestinian towns and cities including Beit Ommar, some Palestinians from 48, Israelis, as well as internationals. On Monday, February 20th, 2012, Palestinian demonstrators in the city of Hebron gathered outside of Red Cross offices to express their solidarity with Khader Adnan, a Palestinian political prisoner in Israeli prison who has been hunger striking for 65 days. Khader has been held without charge or trial for over two months after he was arrested from his home by Israeli Forces from his village near Jenin in the northern West Bank. He has since become a symbol of Palestinian steadfastness and popular resistance to the Israeli occupation, and hundreds of vigils, demonstrations, and solidarity fasts have taken place in communities around Palestine, and the rest of the world as well.

Yousef and Saqqar Abu Maria, two Palestinian activists from Beit Ommar who were arrested on Saturday, February 11, 2012 during an unarmed demonstration against the Israeli occupation, have been released from the Israeli prison of Ramle on the evening of February 13th. Both men were released after being held for more than 48 hours, after they each were ordered to pay a fine of 1500 shekels (roughly $450 usd) each by the Israeli courts. On Saturday, February 11th, 2012, about 100 Palestinian demonstrators supported by international and Israeli solidarity activists, organized a demonstration in the community of Susiya, in the South Hebron Hills of the West Bank. The action was supported by the Palestine Solidarity Project. At 10am, the activists marched to an area where Israeli settlers had illegally erected a house on land belonging to Palestinians, and the Israeli military had blocked off the main access road to Palestinian vehicles with coils of barbed wire.

Activists around the world responded to a call to action initiated by the Palestine Solidarity Project to organize actions in their community to mark the one year anniversary of the murder of Yousef Ikhlayl at the hands of Israeli settlers. Activists in Mexico City, London, New Mexico, Chicago, Beloit, and France put up posters of Yousef in public areas and organized vigils or demonstrations in front of Israeli embassies. In Chicago, activists posted six hundred posters remembering Yousef and decrying the occupation on light posts, bus stops, and newspaper stands and also leafleted outside the Israeli consulate. In France, Yousef’s picture was held up in front of the Israeli Embassy during a vigil to mourn his murder. … Continue reading

On Saturday, February 4th, 2012, Palestinian villagers in Beit Ommar conducted their weekly demonstration against the settlement appropriation of their lands. The activists organized this week’s actions to plant dozens of olive trees near the Israeli settlement of Karmei Tsur. This week, the demonstrators were joined by a group of Palestinian and international runners conducting a marathon across the West Bank from Hebron to Jenin organized by Fair Trade groups and US-based community development group On the Ground.

On Tuesday, January 31st, 2012, Beit Ommar villagers demonstrated near Route 60 at the entrance of the village to commemorate the one year anniversary of the murder of Yousef Ikhlayl, a 17-year-old Beit Ommar youth who was murdered by Israeli settlers on January 28th, 2011. The demonstration was organized by the Popular Committee in Beit Ommar and was supported by the Palestine Solidarity Project, the Popular Committee in Yatta, and several other Palestinian organizations.
