In the early morning of Wednesday April 17th, soldiers from the Israeli Occupation Forces entered the village of Beit Ommar. At 2.30 a.m., they surrounded the house of Mohammed Ahmad Abu Maria and his family.

The soldiers searched Mohammed’s house for two hours and destroyed many household items belonging to the family. After the search, the soldiers beat Mohammed before they arrested him.

Mohammed is only twenty-two years old, but has already spent three years and two months in Israeli prisons. He was released from prison two months ago and had just recently applied to continue his university studies at Palestine Polytechnic University in Hebron.

Non-violent Demonstrators March in Nabi Saleh

Member of PSP and Beit Ommar Popular Committee joined other non-violent demonstrators in the street on Friday April 12th, 2013 in the village of Nabi Saleh, located 20 kilometres North West of Ramallah in the West Bank. The village has organized weekly demonstrations in Nabi Saleh since December of 2009 in order to protest the confiscation of the village’s land and freshwater springs by Israeli settlers.

The demonstrators, which included village residents, international activists and Israeli peace activists, marched to a spring located on Palestinian land that was illegally confiscated by Israeli settlers from the Halamish settlement. 14-Year Old Prisoner Released, Happy to be Back with His Family

14-Year old Nassim Abu Maria was released late Sunday 14th of April after spending 4 ½ months in Ofer Prison, which is located between Jerusalem and Ramallah. He was arrested during a surprise night raid and it was his first time in prison. During the night raid, soldiers came to his house unexpectedly at 3 am and he was told that he was being arrested because the soldiers possessed photos of him throwing stones. He was blindfolded, handcuffed and taken into custody. After ten court appearances, the soldiers were unable to bring forward the photos they allegedly possessed of Abu Maria’s stone throwing, yet, he was still sentenced to prison, without any evidence of his alleged political activity.

Former Hunger Striker Arrested Once Again

Tha’er Halahlah, the famous Palestinian (former) hunger striker, has once again been arrested by the Israeli Occupation Forces.

Halahlah participated in a hunger strike in protest of his administrative detention, without charge and trial, by the Israeli Occupation Forces. After 77 days without food, he was finally released on the 5th of June, 2012. He had been imprisoned for almost three years.

Halahlah has previously told PSP that by his 60th day without food, he had began to believe he would die, and by his 70th day, he had lost hope that he would ever see his family again. On Sunday April 14th, 2013 a 15-year old boy named Mahmoud Suleiman Mahmoud Ikhlayel was shot in the back of his head with a steel-coated rubber bullet in Beit Ommar. He sustained serious injuries to his head and was taken to Hebron Hospital. The incident occurred amidst clashes between Palestinian children and Israeli soldiers that occurred throughout Sunday evening, beginning at around 5 pm.

On Friday, April 12th, 2013, an 11-year old girl named Asisah Abu Maria was shot in Beit Salah, near Road 60. Soldiers entered the area and shot tear gas and rubber bullets. The girl was on the roof of her house and was shot with a steal-coated rubber bullet in her chest. She was taken to Hebron hospital and is now in good condition.

Non-violent Activists Attacked by Soldiers Shooting Tear Gas

Today PSP, the Popular Committee of Beit Ommar and Youth Power of Palestine organised an action in the village of Beit Ommar. PSP and the Popular Committee have been organising weekly demonstrations for years.

The Palestinian, Israeli and International activists gathered outside of Karme Tzure settlement, south of the centre of Beit Ommar. The activists wanted to get as close to the fence to the settlement as possible, to demonstrate their right to walk on their own land.

Israeli Forces Attack School, PSP Activists in Another Invasion Following Funeral

For the third time in 4 days, Israeli forces attacked residents of Beit Ommar after a funeral. On Wednesday, December 26, over 100 soldiers and the “skunk” truck were used in a prolonged attack on the residents of Beit Ommar that lasted over two hours. Soldiers began by firing on the the youth who had gathered near the entrance to the cemetery during the funeral of a man who died suddenly at the age of 37. Soldiers immediately began using rubber-coated steel bullets and live ammunition, as they had on December 22 when they wounded two young men with live ammunition.

Israeli Forces Invade Beit Ommar Again After Funeral, Settler Hit-and-Run

On December 24th a local resident of Beit Ommar died of natural causes. As we have reported before, funerals in Beit Ommar are often attacked by Israeli forces who are stationed at the entrance to the village, which is also the location of the town cemetery. On the same day, a settler bus hit and ran over a child from Beit Ommar, 13 year-old Mohammed Za’aqiq, who was taken to the hospital. The combination of the funeral and the settler hit-and-run were used by the Israeli military as a premise for entering the village and attacking its residents. On Wednesday 7th of November at 3 a.m. Israeli occupation forces raided the village of Beit Ommar. Approximately fifty soldiers arrived in five jeeps and one van to transport prisoners.

Two youth of Beit Ommar were arrested; Mutazem Ibrahim Ikhlayl (20) and Mohammed Nasser Ikhlayl (19). Both of them have been arrested before. The prisoners were taken to the military base in Gush Etzion.
