One Palestinian and Two International Activists Arrested & Beaten in Beit Ommar Demonstration

On Saturday June 25, about 50 Palestinian, Israeli and international activists gathered in Beit Ommar to demonstrate against the Israeli Karmei Tsur settlement, which has annexed hundreds of dunams of Palestinian land. As demonstrators attempted to enter land belonging to Beit Ommar farmers, Israeli soldiers announced that the area was a closed military zone and said they would not allow anyone to pass. Several Palestinians and internationals then attempted to circumvent the military blockade. At this point, at least 6 soldiers assaulted Mohammed G., a 22 year old Palestinian man from Surif. 2 Shot with Live Ammunition, Regional Leader Arrested in Deir Qaddis

Demonstrations began again this week in Deir Qaddis, a small town in the Ramallah district, against the expansion of the Nili settlement onto village land. Residents, joined by Palestinian activists from nearby Ni’lin and Budrus, as well as Israeli and international solidarity activists, have successfully stopped the bulldozers destroying village lands in successive demonstrations. On Wednesday, June 15, two residents, aged 22 and 24 were shot with live ammunition by Israeli forces who invaded the village following protesters retreating after having stopped the bulldozers for nearly an hour. Activists Demonstrate, Work Land Despite Israeli Military Harrasment

On Saturday, April 23, eight Israeli activists and 24 international volunteers joined residents of Beit Ommar for an action near Karmei Tsur organized by the Beit Ommar National Committee Against the Wall and Settlements. The international contingent included volunteers from the Palestine Solidarity Project and International Solidarity Movement, as well as the Belgian group Checkpoint Singers. The demonstrators gathered in the lands near Karmei Tsur, and marched towards the settlement carrying flags and signs and chanting against the occupation.

One Arrested as Palestinian Activists Block Route 60 Near Beit Ommar

On Tuesday, March 8th, 2011, about 70 Palestinians, supported by international solidarity activists, blocked Route 60 (a road that is heavily trafficked by Israeli settlers) near the entrance of Beit Ommar village, between the cities of Hebron and Bethlehem. Traffic came to a halt for almost half an hour as activists waved Palestinian flags and chanted against the occupation. The demonstration was organized as a collective response to increasing settlement expansion in the West Bank and frequent attacks by Israeli Forces on the Palestinian people.

Over 1000 Demonstrate in Hebron to Open Shuhada Street Despite Army Repression

On Friday, February 25th, 2011 at around 1pm, more than 1000 Palestinians, supported by Israeli and international solidarity activists, rallied in the city of Hebron to demand the opening of Shuhada street. Shuhada street was once one of the main economic and transportation hubs in Hebron, but now the street is completely closed to Palestinians and only Israeli settlers are allowed to use it.

This demonstration was particularly important as Israel, with the support of the United States, has increased settler expansion in the West Bank. Beit Ommar Demonstrators Protest Settlers, Vow Solidarity With Egypt

On February 12, 2011, Beit Ommar villagers, supported by Israeli and international solidarity activists, surprised the Israeli military by demonstrating in a different area near the settlement of Karmei Tsur. The area chosen is closest to where Israeli settlers are building new houses on land that legally belongs to Beit Ommar farmers. This week Beit Ommar residents were joined by representatives from popular committees throughout the West Bank, including the villages of An-Nabi Saleh, Hebron, Susiya and Towana.

On Tuesday, January 25th, 2011, Israeli soldiers raided Beit Ommar in the afternoon and arrested 18-year-old Amar Abed Al-Hamid Abu Maria while he was eating in his home. Israeli Forces entered the outskirts of the village from the nearby settlement of Karmei Tsur, at 4pm. Large amounts of tear gas and sound bombs were fired at buildings and people in this area of Beit Ommar.

Upon reaching the the home of Mohammad Abu Maria, brother of Popular Committee members Yousef and Mousa Abu Maria, the soldiers broke into the residence and arrested his son, Amar, who was taken back to Karmei Tsur. Amar’s family was given no reason for his arrest.

On January 17th, 2011, Israeli Authorities delivered home demolition notices to five Palestinian tent residences in Susiya, in the South Hebron Hills. The tents belong to the families of Ayssa Housena Al-Jobor, Omar Housen Al-Jobor, Ahmed Housen Al-Jobor, Ayssa Badr Al-Jobor and Omar Badr Al-Jobor.

The lawyer representing the families, Yasser Al-Jobor, confirmed that the occupation civilian administration had delivered the notices this week. It is not known when the tents will be destroyed and the families currently live in constant uncertainty.

Palestinian Bedouin villagers in Susiya and other communities in the South Hebron Hills face constant harassment from Israeli settlers as well as from the Israeli military. Residences and water wells are periodically demolished and these isolated … Continue reading

Israeli Military Attacks Women, Children, Wedding During Beit Ommar Invasion

Thursday, December 23, at 3:00 in the afternoon, Israeli soldiers entered Beit Ommar from the Karmei Tsur settlement. Without reason, they invaded the home of Ibrahim Abu Maria, member of the National Committee of Beit Ommar. His home is near the Karmei Tsur settlement and the area where non-violent demonstrations organized by the National Committee and the Palestine Solidarity Project begin every Saturday. Today, soldiers burst into the home, insisting on occupying the roof. One Palestinian Youth, Five Solidarity Activists Arrested in Beit Ommar Demonstration

Beit Ommar, Southern West Bank, 1:30pm: One 14-year-old Palestinian boy named Mohammad Awad, two internationals volunteering with P.S.P., and three Israeli solidarity activists were arrested by Israeli Forces during a peaceful demonstration against Karmei Tsur, an illegal Israeli settlement built on Beit Ommar land.

Beit Ommar and the adjacent Saffa valley have recently witnessed a tide of suppression by Israeli soldiers. Thursday, November 18th, thirteen Palestinian, Israeli, and international activists were arrested accompanying farmers to their land in the Saffa valley, near the illegal Bat Ayn settlement.
